Right to Information (RTI) Application
RTI stands for Right To Information and has been given the status of a fundamental right under Article 19(1) of the Constitution. Article 19 (1) under which every citizen has freedom of speech and expression and have the right to know how the government works, what role does it play, what are its functions and so on.
RTI Application (s) (Right to Information) can bring transparency in governance: both at the local level (roads not getting cleaned?) or at the country level (enquiring about the meetings held at the Prime Ministerial level) and so on. The list is not exhaustive
Using
the Right to Information, an average Indian citizen can take on corrupt
governments and can remove some of the common problems in his
community by using this tool.
If
the road near your residence is not being built well and on time, you can file
an RTI application against the concerned department. You can even know things
like how much money is being spent on the library of your school, college etc.
How to file a Right to Information (RTI) application?
Filing an RTI
application is simple but needs expertise which generates the requisite
response from the government body.
For
example if you are filing an RTI complaint to do something about the garbage
disposal process around where you live, one of the questions written by a lay
man might be “Why is the garbage not being disposed?”.
But
a question like “What were the number of complaints received against your
office in last one year about garbage disposal in ABC society” will get a more
exact response.
Filing an RTI application against a
private body
Also,
did you know that you can even get information from a private body?
For
example, if you need some information about the working of a private college,
you can file an RTI application against say government body under which that
college comes.
It
could be All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for example, or the
Ministry of HRD.
